Shadows are one of the most important tools for creating depth, mood, and atmosphere in an image, but for many people, they can feel confusing and unpredictable. I designed this course to make light and shadow feel less confusing and more intuitive to apply yourself.

What You’ll Learn

Across five focused lessons totalling around 50 minutes, you’ll learn the core principles behind believable light and shadow, broken down into clear, practical ideas without unnecessary technical theory.

Light Logic & Behavior: How light interacts with different forms and surfaces.
Simplifying Complex Forms: Learn how to break complex objects down into simple forms that are much easier to light.
Core Shadow Elements: Understand the underlying logic behind shadows and how to work out where they fall.
Advanced Shadow Mapping: Explore a more precise approach to shadow placement. Even if you choose a simpler style for your everyday work, this advanced logic will greatly strengthen your understanding and intuition.

By the end of the course, you'll have developed an understanding of shadow logic that makes shadow placement feel more intuitive and far less like guesswork.

The course is very interesting and useful for those wishing to get started with shadow theory, as it covers the subject from scratch. However, I would have liked English subtitles for non-native speakers who aren't fully fluent. The price is perhaps a bit high considering the course's duration. You can download the videos, and there are several downloadable worksheets for practice.

I thought it was really great. I would like to have more examples of the application of the shadow and light rules on coloring pages.

I really enjoyed this course. What I appreciated most was the simplicity and focus of the approach: Using a two-color shadow mapping system instead of relying on gradients made the concepts much easier to understand. The explanations were clear, and the final section going deeper into cast shadows was especially interesting and valuable.

I would have loved to see one or two additional chapters exploring cast shadows on more complex objects, such as the teddy bear example shown, and how shadow mapping can be approached in those situations. The focus on basic forms was great for building a strong foundation.

The animations and examples are simple, minimalistic, and visually appealing, which was one of the reasons I was drawn to the course. The calm and soothing narration also fits the style perfectly and makes it very enjoyable to follow.

For me, this course was worth the investment because it provides exactly the kind of beginner-friendly introduction I was looking for. I didn’t want to go through overly complex explanations of shadow mapping, and it was difficult to find a course that approached the topic in such a simple and approachable way.

Considering the length of the course, I think the value would have felt even stronger with a bit more content, especially a few more examples with complex objects. That said, I am happy to support the creator and appreciate the effort that went into making this course.

I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who wants to understand the basics of shadow mapping without feeling overwhelmed, and I would happily buy another course from this creator in the future.

This is a fantastic course! The instructions and visuals are easy to follow. I am by no means artistically inclined but after taking the session once I attempted to color a page using the skills I had learned and couldn't believe the difference! Even my family and friends were impressed. High recommend!

Really helpful course! I've attempted shadows before and they always looked wrong, but after watching these lessons I understand them so much better. Just finished a 2 color shadow effect I'm super proud of and excited to practice more.
